Local celebrations call for local ingredients - June 20

It’s almost as if we planned it. The weekend when Chappaquacelebrates both its dads and Horace Greeley grads… we’re bringing you the most raucous band in our line-up: Lucien Smith and the Blues Cruise Band. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face and a tap in your toes.

Whether you are celebrating a grad or a dad, there will be food involved, that we know! Come get everything you need for BBQs and graduation parties, right at the market—from juicy steaks, sausages, or swordfish for the grill, to summer salad fixings, hummus, fancy cheeses, and charcuterie for festive spreads. And we’ve got plenty of options to add some flair to your dessert table (Heathcote BakeryButter + BowRed Barn Bakery).

Obercreek Farm tells us their Hot Shot salad mix returns this week! Just what you need for a salad celebrating your local hot shot (be it a dad or a grad). Add some to this tangy spicy cabbage and chicken salad.

Sam, our favorite farmer from Fresh Meadow Farm, sent us a picture from the fields of her wielding a bunch of just-picked beets. Naturally, I went hunting for beet recipes. This one tickled my taste buds because it pulls in creamy burrata, which you can now find both at Maplebrook Creamery and La Trafila Pasta. And since burrata is so plentiful, why not pair it with cherries, entering their peak season right now? This recipefor crushed cherries, pistachios and burrata will steal the show. Clearly, beets, cherries and burrata make good bedfellows because I found yet another recipe which includes all three!

Clearly, cherries and burrata make good bedfellows because I found a similar recipe which calls upon olives instead of pistachios for the party. Doc Pickle is ready for you to sidle up to their olive bar.

Prefer your cherries served sweet? These sour cherry streusel bars are the perfect thing to serve at a gathering since you can cut them to size. The recipe calls for frozen berries, but natch, you’re going to use fresh (and local) for that extra pop. You can also find your butter (Le Roux Trading Co. and Maplebrook Creamery both carry exquisite meadow butter). You can even get your Wild Hive Farm local flour from Le Roux, as well. While you’re there, pick up some Kriemhild cream to make this recipe for cherry ice cream! If you pick up yogurt and berries at the market make sure to also pick up some granola from Nicky’s Made with Love, for a breakfast of champions.

We have some fun crafters coming to the market Saturday should you be in need of gifts. Lisa Lomonaco, of Sparkle and Splash, makes art inside the shells of oysters culled from the Hampton Bays, and Hudson Wood Art crafts beautiful rustic vases out of local fallen trees. Win-win!

Happy Father’s Day to all who father, and go GRADS!
