Eat the rainbow

August 8, 2026

This time of year, farmers markets offer up a true embarrassment of riches. From blueberries to eggplant to sweet corn to peaches, your choices are plentiful and produce bins are overflowing. If you're an eggplant afficionado, you're going to want to try this Grilled Eggplant with Whipped Fetashowstopping side. Find eggplants at Mead Orchards or Obercreek Farmand feta at Maplebrook Farm Creamery.

Take full advantage of plum season with this New York Times recipe for Grilled Pork Chops with Plum BBQ Sauce. Cooking the plums down into a sweet-tart sauce leads to fun, fruity results. Pair with crispy roasted potatoes from Fresh Meadow Farm or a big green salad based on a bag of Obercreeks famous hot-shot greens. Can’t get enough of summer sweet corn? Change up your repertoire with this spicy corn and shishito salad, Obercreek Farm will have an abundance of shishitos, along with cucumbers, bell peppers, and their first eggplants.

We’re delighted to welcome Ash Hopper Botanical Skincare back to the Chappaqua Farmers Market. Ash Hopper’s philosophy is simple: they believe skincare should be as kind to your skin as it is to the planet. Blending green chemistry with the art of traditional perfumery, they create plant-based skincare that honors nature and modern science alike.

As proselytized by Channery Hill Farm: do the right thing, use a condiment! Whether you scatter their Smoked Scape Salt on sliced sun-ripened tomatoes (mozzerella cheese is strictly optional) or dollop their Green Tomato Ketchup on your turkey burger, their seasonings, relishes, and sauces elevate every dish.

This locally-raised bounty makes it easy to “eat the rainbow;” to consume foods of every hue and stripe. As we learned in grade school, the colors of the rainbow spell out ROY G. BIV. Here are some suggestions to help you create your own market rainbow:

R is for red tomatoes, which are appearing in sizes from tiny grape to fat Big Boy Beefsteak. Sprinkle wee ones on your salads and slice beefsteaks onto your sandwiches.

O is for the plentiful, succulent and briny olives you'll find at Doc Pickle. Enjoy them on a charcuterie board to kick off your BBQ.

Y is for yellow Black Eyed Susans appearing in market bouquets; their sturdy blossoms announce August’s advent.

G is for greens; spinach, salad mix, kale, and more!

B is for the blueberries still gracing market tables. Try Alison Roman's blueberry muffin recipe, or simply eat them out of hand.

I is for Indigo Lime, just one of the fascinating organic soaps on offer at Ash Hopper Botanical Skincare.

V is for virtuous; the way you feel after you shop local and eat clean.

Ready, Set, Sharp! joins us this week, so be sure to bring your knives, scissors, and pruning shears for Matt to sharpen while you shop. Lucien C. Smith Blues Cruise will enliven your morning with their unique mix of rock, blues, and funk. See you at the market, where we’ll be celebrating the tail end of National Farmers Market Week!
