New vendors a pooch PSA

We’re five weeks into our market season and we’re tickled with how things are going —especially with all the sunshine this week which should help our rain-drenched farms get back on track.

Finally we have some weather worthy of grilling. Let’s enjoy it shall we? How about starting with some grilled bone-in rib-eyes with blue cheese. Second Mouse Cheese can hook you up with the cheese and let Ryan, at R&M Farm, take care of the rest. Or, since Fresh Meadow Farm will have garlic scapes on Saturday, you can swap out the blue cheese for his tangy scape pesto.

Prefer chicken? These grilled chicken thighs in a yogurt marinade (White Moustache, natch) are delicious. Especially with a side of grilled asparagus.

In the sweets department, we’re happy to have Mt. Kisco mom, Nikki Cannon, of Butter + Bow join us. Nikki makes delicate, “grown-up” and globally-inspired cookies which are as pretty as they are unique—and delicious. They make great gifts. Don’t eat grain? No worries! Also joining us is Mayfield Farm Bakery specializing in grain-free cookies and desserts like olive oil cake (and muffins!) made with seasonal local fruit, pecan cake made with Mexican Hot Chocolate frosting and grain-free cardamom granola. Everything they make is sweetened with either dates or maple syrup. (We love that!) Plus, they use local eggs and fruit.

They should complement Bohemian Baked quite nicely.

7 Kitchen Road returns this week with their tasty crackers, so make sure you pick up some spreads from Bonnes Saveurs for a perfect match.

In the spirits department we’re delighted to add Klocke Estate, a farm and distillery in Claverack, NY to our lineup. They make an exquisite vermouth, both white and red for you fans of a “perfect” Manhattan. They focus on old-world methods and regenerative and sustainable agriculture on 60 acres of vineyards and apple orchards. They also make bottled cocktails, eau-de-vie and an  aged brandy is on the horizon.

And now for a PSA...

We love dogs at the Chappaqua Farmers Market. We give them a ton of IG love and even dedicate an entire parade to them every year near Halloween. The pleasure of owning (and parading around town or the market with) a dog is part of the joy of living in our leafy suburbs. But last week there was an incident at the market that gave us pause. A dog lunged at our market manager’s calf and bit it, breaking the skin. She is fine, but there are concerns about whether the dog was vaccinated against rabies or not. Since the owners left the market after this happened, there is no way of knowing.

All this to say that, we love dogs and will continue to have them at the market but, if you own an aggressive or unpredictable dog, we ask that you kindly leave your pooch at home. The market is a happy place and this kind of behavior—from the dog and its owners—is just not ok. Also, if you bring your dog to the market please make sure your dog is vaccinated and has a tag to prove it. And, of course, make sure they’ve taken care of their morning business before they arrive and do keep an eye on where they raise their leg. Tent weights can be tempting.

See you (and Fido) at the market!
