Saturday is our last market of the season and what a season it was!
Though the cold wet spring wreaked havoc on our strawberry crops, the late summer heat gave us a bumper crop of fall vegetables with sweet, sweet tomatoes lasting until October! Never a dull moment in the life of a New York farmer.
The weather looks sunny and pleasant for Saturday which we are so grateful for. So, please, make a point of coming out and supporting your favorite vendors before they pack up the tents. Bring extra market bags and maybe even a caddy with wheels, so that you can stock up on all your favorites, not just for holiday entertaining but for those bitter cold months when you want to be reminded of those summer Saturday mornings when half the town gathers on the grass to enjoy good music, good food and good vibes.
We’re so glad you have been enjoying the wine at Milea Estate Vineyards. Why not buy an extra case if you've gotten hooked on one of their award-winning varietals. Try their Farmhouse Cabernet Franc with its bouquet of vibrant red cherries, and delicate notes of graphite. Their wines have a subtle minerality, due to the Hudson Valley’s ice age origins.
Charlotte’s Home Kitchen was a Johnny Come Lately to our lineup this year but in a short amount of time baker Charlotte Boyle has racked up quite a few fans with exquisite cakes, so delicious you would NEVER know they were free of gluten or dairy. They may as well be made with pixie dust they are so whimsically delicious.
This was Butter + Bow’s first experience selling at a farmers market and you’d think they’ve been at it for years. Their globally-inspired cookies, their local connection, their generosity with Feeding Westchester...we love everything about them and are so pleased that we helped them find their wings this season.
I have a hard time believing that so many of you drink sangria in the dead of winter but Bo, founder/owner of Manor Sangria, assures me that his sales are big in Chappaqua this time of year. So you’ll be happy to know that they will be there with their festive Mason jars filled with fruit and spice infused wines ready to pour!
I send you off into the winter abyss with two recipes I’m sure you will make on repeat over the next few months they are so good: first, this Indian-spiced-tomato and egg casserole which is as delicious for brunch with friends or a weeknight family dinner. And, this hearty mushroom lasagna.
We tend to focus on the pastries, both savory and sweet at the Red Barn Bakery tent, but do not overlook chef Randell’s healthy and delicate soups – all organic. If you don’t have time to make dinner, this is a much better solution than take out...and so healthy. Her flavors this week: Roasted Cauliflower with rose petals and Moroccan spices, French lentil with cumin roasted carrots, Butternut squash with roasted apple and nutmeg – all gluten-free and vegan. Also, carrot ginger and Matzo ball soup, too.
Ryan, of R&M Farm, will be making his rounds through the winter delivering his pastured meats to his loyal customers who can’t go without his chicken, beef or lamb. Make sure to get on this delivery list. And he doesn’t care if you’ve been naughty or nice.
And if you are wondering what our lovely market manager Kim Patota will be doing this winter, she’ll be busy painting murals inspired by nature for nurseries and kids’ rooms. This is one of her many side gigs and she gets her inspiration from James Browne’s illustrations. You can reach out to her at info@hudsunstudios.com
Hastings and Irvington Farmers Markets will be operating year-round. You can find the schedule for both markets here.
Thank you for your extreme generosity this season. It is our pleasure to be a part of your Saturday routine. Until next time...
