Seeing currants at the market brings back happy childhood memories of berry picking for me. Currants are members of the gooseberry family, which you’ll soon be seeing at the market also. They are known as “superfruits” for their naturally high antioxidant capacity due to the pigmented polyphenol, cyanidin, which is found in their skin. Also a good supply of vitamins C and K, manganese and potassium. Naturally high in pectin, the sweet-tart berry lends itself to sauce and jam or jelly, but can be enjoyed fresh in salads, baking and garnishes too. Make this simple red currant jelly to enjoy with meat, cheese or bread. Red Currant Clafoutis is another eggy, sweet and fluffy way to showcase your currants. Pick up some lamb chops from R&M Farm and market herbs for these Grilled Lamb Chops in Red Currant and Rosemary Sauce.
Cucumber Chow is a fun way to use cucumbers and most all the other ingredients are also available at the market. If you watch Chris’ video in the recipe link, (which I highly recommend), he refers to the chow pairing well with “adult beverages.” Lucky for us, Broken Bow Brewery and Springbrook Hollow Farm are both visiting this week.
The second Saturday of the month means Ready Set Sharp will also be at the market. Bring along all your dull metal implements for a sharp refresh. It’s always interesting to see who drops off the most unique item! He’s located at the market entrance, so drop then shop, and your items are usually ready as you leave.
Welcome back Chappaqua Library who is attending the market each month on the second Saturday. We’ll have some yoga mats for “read alongs” at their tent. Renana with Fiddlehead’s Cooking Studio will have a table teaching children pickling starting at 11am.
Charles with The Misshapened Bowl was unable to make his regularly scheduled first Saturday last week. He’s coming this week with his unique handcrafted wooden bowls turned from felled or fallen NY state trees. The perfect wedding and anniversary gift or something unique for anyone special, including yourself!
Take two on introducing a new, plant-based food truck (scheduling issues a few weeks ago). XOLO crafts exquisite Mexican favorites with a twist: they are completely meat-free though you'd never know it. Treat yourself to a breakfast burrito or torta or “carnitas” taco made with shredded mushrooms; you will not believe the depth and flavor of his vegetarian creations! For the time being, XOLO accepts only cash so plan accordingly!
See you on Saturday!
