As if the season weren’t “scary” enough a high-stakes presidential election looms.
Thank goodness for the small pleasures that make us happy, like the simple routine of shopping at the farmer's market every Saturday and chatting with your neighbors and favorite vendors.
We are happy to report that Tivoli Mushrooms will be joining us weekly for the rest of the season! This farm grows some of the prettiest mushrooms we’ve ever seen.
And their vendors are extremely knowledgeable about the flavor profile for each variety they sell. They love to geek out about fungi so don’t be shy about getting educated.
Once you buy your mushrooms head to La Trafila for some bucatini or spaghetti and make this creamy pasta with crispy mushrooms. Serve with some Hot Shot salad mix from Obercreek Farm for a perfectly simple fall feast.
Or, make this recipe for crisped mushrooms with creamy white beans and kale or this adaptation of a Madhur Jaffrey mushroom and winter squash curry. Feel free to add some lacinato kale to this dish!
The kale has been looking so fetching lately at Fresh Meadow Farm.
Sasha’s Seafood returns this week so make sure to buy some fish. May I suggest cod to make this easy peasy baked cod recipe with lemon and garlic?
Oliver Putnam, Martin Short’s character in Only Murders in the Building, has an outsized appreciation of hummus, and dips in general. He would love our new vendor, Bonnes Saveurs, who will join us again this Saturday after a very warm welcome last week. And The Pesto Brothers, with their bright and flavorful pesto and Caprese sandwiches will also be on the market plaza Saturday.
I know we’re all focused on the election but Thanksgiving is not that far off. This is a good time to get some “practice” in if you want to unveil a new recipe this year. For instance, this Basque pumpkin cheesecake looks insanely good, but I’d hate to make it for the first time for guests...Give it a whirl and let us know how it turns out!
And, because Thanksgiving and the holidays are indeed around the corner, you might want to invest in a luxurious yet sustainable charcuterie or cutting board. Joseph Ferrara of Sound Designs Woodworking is back at the market this week with his stunning boards that do double-duty: slice your cheese and charcuterie on one side and serve/present them on the other! Ta Da! All of his boards are honed from downed and fallen trees, mostly sourced from the North Shore of Long Island.
These make great wedding and housewarming gifts, too. Make sure to buy some crackers from 7 Kitchen Road for that board!
Make sure you buy yourself some healthy, organic dark chocolate bars from Raw Chocolate Love to get you through election night, rather than dipping into your kids’ Halloween haul. No doubt The Spirits Lab has got something to calm the nerves.
Our music this week comes courtesy of Al Indig. And, our food truck is the Kinwich Sandwich Truck, always a treat. I love that they’ve always got something new and interesting - but always locally- sourced - on the menu, whether it’s a chicken banh mi or a new take on a fried-chicken sandwich. Please come join us for another pleasantly warm fall day at the market. And then go out and VOTE!
See you at the market!
