Hey everyone. How’s your summer going? By now, you’ve either gone on vacation or are
planning to head out soon. We’re so pleased that so many of you are choosing to spend your Saturday mornings with us, despite (or in between) your comings and goings.
This week, the Julian Kalehoff Jazz duo (formerly of the Mellow Fellows) is performing and I can’t think of a better musical fit for a lazy, midsummer market than these young R&B and jazz musicians.
What else is happening this week? Mead Orchards is bringing in their sweet field bouquets with pops of color only a zinnia can deliver.
Sam, at Fresh Meadow Farms, is bringing new potatoes with very thin skin and “mountains of green beans.” You know where my mind just went, knowing that the market is brimming with tomatoes, basil, and lots of farm-fresh eggs? Salade Niçoise of course. This is such an easy dinner to prepare for guests on a hot summer’s night. And so satisfying on the umami front. There are so many different variations. Mine always includes black oil-cured olives, some anchovy fillets, red pepper slices, hard-boiled eggs, and tomatoes (I like to mix heirloom with cherries) and I rest all the ingredients on a bed of tender lettuce leaves (that is controversial in some parts) . And the tuna, of course. You can opt to buy your sushi-grade tuna from Pura Vida Fishery and sear it, or buy some fancy-pants oil-cured tuna at your favorite gourmet grocer.
Serve with your favorite country loaf from either Wave Hill or Bien Cuit, and dinner is served. Need wine with that? Head to Milea Winery for a crisp rosé. Or pick up some Manor Sangria, which goes with the Mediterranean vibe.
Sam tells us they will also have the first eggplant of the season and squash blossoms too. Make this the year you take some home rather than simply admirethem (quizzically) at the market. Try these squash blossom beignets. Or, stuff themwith smoked ricotta from Maplebrook Creamery.
If you’re hosting a World Cup Final viewing party make sure to pick up lots of cheese from Second Mouse and charcuterie from Goode & Local.
And don’t forget to grab an assortment of spreads from Bonnes Saveurs. Anchor your table with a seasonal and classic French tomato tart — even if the French didn’t make it to the finals. If you’re rooting for Argentina, pick up a variety of empanadas from Villa Emilia. Or, if you’re rooting for Spain, pick up plenty of market eggs and those new potatoes to make your own tortilla española.
On a more serious note, in light of the parasite outbreak making its rounds across the country right now, buying local produce directly from the farmer who grows it is paramount. Not only are you supporting local farms and agriculture, you are also making a safer choice.
Speaking of sustainability, SAB will be at our CULTIVATE tent this week and next to collect food scraps from the market for composting. You can find out more about how to turn your plate food scraps into fertile soil here.
We’re happy to report that Dough Co. Bagels is back on the plaza this week. Oh how we missed them. Before you settle in front of the music, grab some Grumpy dumplings, a mushroom or spinach empanada from Villa Emilia or a brunch-y biscuit from Fearless Cook. Don’t forget, they always offer refreshing and interesting iced herbal teas, both cooling and calming.
See you at the market!
