Summer Swan Song

I cling to summer until  the local corn stops showing up at the market. And Mead Orchards tells us that there is still plenty in the fields this week. So I went digging for some fall-forward corn recipes and found this recipe for roasted poblano peppers stuffed with corn, which looks absolutely divine and is apt, since poblanos (and so many other peppers) are having their moment at the market right now.

I also dug up this corn chowder recipewhich will deliver all the right feels after a stressful, emotional and exhausting first week of school.

The first Sunday night after the first week of school calls for a roast chickenin my book. Letterbox can take care of you with the hen. Serve with some roasted carrots and potatoes. 

A perfect dish for this time of year when the tomatoes are getting a little soft at the market  is the classic rustic French dish, tomates farcies, or stuffed tomatoes. My mom made this dish at least once a week in late summer, and often used the same stuffing to stuff peppers. You should find everything you need for the above Daniel Boulud recipe at the market this week, from the ground pork at R&M Farm, right down to the shallots. Need a vegetarian option? Consider stuffing your tomatoes with some plant-based patties from Plantidote Foods.

Peaches are also sticking around. Consider making some peach compoteto enjoy with a stack of pancakes made with Wild Hive flour on Sunday morning.  Or adding it to your kids’ breakfast yogurt in the morning to fuel them for a long day of learning.

Caradonna Farms is bringing their popular deep purple Concord grapes which fill the market with their heady sweet scent. They of course look gorgeous on a cheese platter (Second Mouse is back this week andNorwegian Baked crackers will make those platters extra special - and crispy) but do use them in savory preparations, as suggested in this Food52 roundup. I’m eyeing the spicy sausage, with kale ribbons and Concord grapes for my next dinner party.

A gentle reminder that while we do love and allow dogs at our market, we do not welcome dogs that are unpredictable or unfriendly. If your pooch is new to you and you’re not sure how it will behave in a crowd, please leave it at home. Do not bring your dog to the market if you know it is not good with other dogs or with young children.
